Why most removals firms will not tell you a price

Search for removals in Nottingham and you will find plenty of firms and almost no numbers. Nearly every one of them says “call for a quote”, which is understandable, because a house move genuinely is different every time. But it leaves you doing the one thing nobody wants to do when they are already moving house: ringing six companies to find out what the going rate is.

What a full house move costs

We will not print a single figure for a house move, because doing so would mean quoting you a number we then have to walk back. What we can do is show you the national picture and then be straight about how your move sits against it.

Checkatrade, the trade directory, publishes cost guides for UK removals. As things stand, it puts:

The six things that change your price

2. How far it is going

3. Stairs and floors

Every flight adds time to every item. A third floor flat with no lift is a materially harder job than a ground floor one, and it is far better priced in at the quote than discovered on the day.

4. Parking and access

The one most people forget to mention. If the van has to sit fifty metres away, every single item gets carried fifty metres. 5. Dismantling and reassembly

Beds, wardrobes and flat pack furniture frequently have to come apart to leave the room at all. We do it and we put it back together, but it is time, and time is the thing you are paying for.

6. How well packed you are

This is the lever that is entirely yours. A house that is boxed, labelled and stacked by the front door loads in a fraction of the time of one where the kitchen cupboards are still full. If you want to bring your own cost down, this is where you do it.

Is it cheaper to hire a van and move yourself?

Sometimes, on paper. It is worth doing the sum properly rather than assuming, because the headline van hire price is rarely the whole cost. A do it yourself move usually means paying for the van hire itself, the fuel, the insurance excess or waiver, a deposit held against the card, and a day of your own time. Then you still need a second pair of hands, because a wardrobe does not come down a staircase on its own.

For a genuinely small load, and if you already have someone to help and are comfortable driving a Luton van through the city centre, doing it yourself can work out cheaper. For a single item, it almost never does: our £50 city price is usually less than the day rate on a small van before you have put any fuel in it. And for a full house, you are weighing a saving against a day of heavy lifting and the risk of damaging something expensive.

Do you charge more for evenings, weekends or short notice?

No. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so a Sunday morning and a Wednesday afternoon are both just working slots. A same day or short notice move is priced on the same basis as one booked a month out: what you are moving, how far, and how easy the access is.

The one timing point that genuinely matters is demand. The last Friday of the month and the end of August are the busiest moving times in the calendar, so book early for those if you can.
