2. We give you a price. Free, no obligation, and given to you up front rather than after the job. If anything about your move could change the price, we will tell you what and why at this point, not on the day.
3. We agree a date and a time. Including evenings, weekends and same day where we have a van free. If your date is not fixed yet because you are in a chain, say so, and we will work with the movement rather than against it.
4. We arrive and check the job over. A quick walk round so we know what is going and what is staying, what is fragile, and what needs taking apart. It takes five minutes and it saves an hour later.
5. We load, and we protect as we go. Protective blankets on furniture wherever possible, and everything strapped down in the van so nothing shifts in transit. We treat your belongings the way we would want ours treated.
6. We drive and we unload. Boxes go into the room you want them in, not dumped in the hall. Furniture gets reassembled if we took it apart. We do the carrying at both ends.
7. We finish when the job is finished. If something needs another run, or the new place is not ready, we will talk to you about it rather than leave you with a problem.

What affects the price of a house move

Nobody enjoys being quoted one figure and charged another. So rather than hide behind “every job is different”, here is the honest list of what actually moves the number up and down. If you can tell us about these when you ring, your quote will be accurate first time.

• How much you are moving. The single biggest factor. A one bed flat and a four bed house are different days’ work. It is about volume rather than the number of bedrooms, so a heavily furnished two bed can be a bigger job than a sparse three bed.
• How far it is going. A move across West Bridgford is not a move to Newcastle. Distance affects the time and the fuel, and on longer runs it can affect whether the job fits in one day.
• Stairs, lifts and floors. A third floor flat with no lift is genuinely harder than a bungalow. Two flights at one end and three at the other is a real difference in time, and it is better priced in than argued about later.
• Parking and access. This is the one people forget. If the van cannot get within fifty metres of the door, everything gets carried that fifty metres, twice. Terraced streets, permit bays, city centre restrictions and gated developments all count. Tell us in advance and we plan around it.
• Furniture that needs dismantling. Beds, wardrobes and flat pack units often have to come apart to get out of a room at all. We do that, and we rebuild at the other end, but it takes time and time is what you are paying for.
• How well packed you are. A house where everything is boxed, labelled and stacked by the door loads in a fraction of the time of a house where it is still in cupboards. This is the one lever entirely in your hands, and it is the easiest way to bring your own price down.
• When you want it. Not because we charge a premium for a Sunday, we do not, but because the last Friday of the month is the busiest moving day there is. Book early for it.

Get a price without waiting for a survey

Plenty of removals firms in Nottingham will not price your move until someone has been round to look at it. That means booking an appointment, being in for it, and waiting for a written quote afterwards. If your completion date is six weeks away, fine. If you found out on Tuesday that you are moving on Saturday, it is useless.

Parking and access around Nottingham

Access is the single most underestimated part of a Nottingham move, and it is the thing most likely to turn a four hour job into a six hour one. Being local means we already know where the awkward bits are.

• City centre, Hockley and the Lace Market. Loading restrictions, pedestrianised stretches and very limited waiting. These moves want an early start, and they want planning rather than optimism.
• Terraced streets in Forest Fields, Sneinton, Radford and Basford. Resident permit bays and narrow roads. If the van cannot get outside the door, everything is carried further, so it is worth telling us in advance.
• Student areas: Lenton, Dunkirk and the Arboretum. Genuinely difficult in late June and September when half the street is moving at once.
• Flats and new build developments. Gated entry, a single lift shared with every other resident, and loading bays that need booking through a concierge or building manager. Check before the day, not on it.
• Older suburbs like Mapperley, Sherwood and Carlton. Steep drives and tight turns rather than parking problems.
• West Bridgford on a match day. If you are moving near the ground when there is a fixture on, the timing matters more than anything else in this list.

None of these are reasons a move cannot happen. They are reasons to mention where you live when you ring, so the plan fits the street.

Packing: what we do, and what is better left to you

We are a removals firm rather than a packing company, and we will be straight with you about where that line sits, because paying someone to pack a house is expensive and it is not always money well spent.

Protective blankets on furniture, wrapping for the things that need it, and taking apart what needs taking apart are all part of the job. If you want us to bring packing materials, ask when you book and we will sort that out with you.

What we would genuinely recommend is packing your own boxes if you have the time, because it is the one thing that reliably brings your own cost down. A house that is boxed, labelled by room and stacked near the front door loads in a fraction of the time of one where the kitchen cupboards are still full. Label by the room the box is going to, not by what is in it. That is the single most useful thing you can do for your own move.

If your completion date moves

Chains slip. It is the most common thing that goes wrong with a house move and it is almost never anybody’s fault. Two things help.

The first is that we are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so when the date lands somewhere awkward, a Sunday morning or a late Friday evening, that is a slot we can actually work. A firm that only operates weekday daytimes cannot help you with a completion that finishes at half past four on a Friday.

The second is telling us early. If your date is looking shaky, say so when you book rather than the night before. We would far rather hold a provisional slot and move it than have you lose the date entirely.

If you end up needing somewhere to put your belongings between completions, we do not run a storage facility ourselves. Tell us and we will talk you through the options honestly, including whether a short delay and a second run works out cheaper than a month of storage, which it often does.

Insurance and looking after your things

How we protect your belongings on the day is straightforward: protective blankets on furniture wherever possible, careful handling of anything fragile, and everything strapped down in the van so the load does not move in transit. We treat your things the way we would want ours treated, and we would rather take an extra ten minutes than rush a wardrobe down a staircase.

On insurance specifically: ask us before you book and we will send you our cover details in writing. You should ask that of any removals firm you are considering, and you should be wary of one that will not put it in writing. Our advice, whoever you use, is to keep documents, keys, jewellery, medication and anything genuinely irreplaceable with you in your own car rather than in the van.

What to ask any Nottingham removals firm before you book

Your moving day checklist

Print this, or keep it on your phone. Everything here makes moving day shorter, and a shorter move is a cheaper move.

Two weeks before

• Book your removals date and confirm it in writing
• Start on the rooms you use least: the loft, the spare room, the garage
• Book time off work, and childcare or a dog sitter for the day
• Tell your council, your bank, your GP and the DVLA you are moving
• Set up Royal Mail redirection

The week before

• Pack everything except the things you use daily
• Label every box with the room it is going into, not what is in it. The room is what we need to know
• Check the parking at both ends and arrange a permit or a suspended bay if you need one
• Take meter readings at the old place and book the final bills
• Run down the freezer rather than trying to move a full one

The day before

• Defrost and dry the fridge freezer, and drain the washing machine
• Pack a first night box: kettle, mugs, tea, phone chargers, toilet roll, bedding, medication, a change of clothes
